Unite your senses and attend Taste the Color, a synesthetic event taking place on Friday, June 6, 2008, at DJT Fine Art Gallery on Tenth Avenue at 24th Street in Manhattan from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sponsored by LUMIATRA, a new non-profit multimedia arts production company, the event will feature the colorful synesthetic expression of mixologist David Shiovitz, who will create unique cocktails inspired by four Russian avant- garde art pieces on display at the gallery. Guests will stimulate their palates with these synesthetic concoctions and test their own synesthetic sensibilities by matching the taste of the drink with the piece of art that served as its muse. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent action, with the chance of owning an inspirational piece of original art.
Synesthesia is defined as an involuntary condition in which sensory stimuli are mixed in the brain. Although discussions of synesthetic phenomena can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, the topic regained enormous popularity during the Golden Age of Russian culture that reached its peak at the turn of the 20th century. Over the past two decades, neuro-scientists and brain researchers have discovered that the incidence of synesthesia is much more prevalent than was once thought.
“It is estimated that one out of every 23 people today have synesthesia, but the actual prevalence may well be much higher because many people do not realize that they have it,” says Dr. Anna Forsythe, LUMIATRA President and Founder. “At the Taste the Color event, guests may discover an inner artistic side to themselves they never knew they had. Whether or not someone in fact is a synesthete, indulging in this unique sensory journey might help one ‘see’ the world in a newer, richer way.”
Over the next several months, LUMIATRA will be presenting a series of innovative events and performances dedicated to bringing to life the “synesthetic art” ideas of Russian avant-garde artists with the goal of creating the spark to ignite the next Golden Age of Russian culture.
Admission for Taste the Color is $35.00, and free for CLUB LUMIATRA members. LUMIATRA is a registered not-for-profit company; 100 percent of the proceeds from the event will be used for the creation of cultural and educational projects to further promote Russian culture and synesthesia.
