FERDINAND! is receiving a full run at Coeurage Theatre / Actors Circle after a highly successful limited engagement at The Promenade Playhouse in Santa Monica last June. The production is comprised of two one-act plays by dissident turned first Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel. Written in 1975 under the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, FERDINAND! portrays Havel’s own personal story before he was imprisoned.
The complete original cast, an impressive collection of international artists, is on board for the new run of this production:
Ilya Volok graduated from Moscow Art Theatre’s Drama School and has appeared in more than ninety films and TV series, including Oliver Stone's U-Turn, The Soloist, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Charlie Wilson’s War, Six Feet Under, Without a Trace, Alias, and the upcoming feature Water for Elephants. LA Theater credits include Just a Song at Twilight (Write Act Repertory Company), Cat’s Paw (Actor’s Studio), Cassat and Degas (Hudson Theatre), Destiny's Calling (Stella Adler), and his two-man play Fakov in America.
Svetlana Efremova spent 11 years starring in plays for the St. Petersburg State Theatre before launching her US career on Broadway in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. She then attended The Yale School of Drama before continuing to roles in films such as White Oleander, Phone Booth, The Island, K-19 and dozens of TV series, including a recent guest lead on The Closer.
Alon Aboutboul, one of Israel's biggest movie stars, is crossing over with a starring role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming feature Body of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
James Babson has been working extensively in Europe both on screen and on stage. Career highlights include the 2002 TV film Doctor Zhivago and the mini-series Hitler: The Rise of Evil.
The play’s director, Ye’ela Rosenfeld, started as a director in the film squad of the Israeli Army, and later in the Israeli film and TV industry. She relocated to Prague where she worked as writer and director, including directing the behind-the-scenes featurette for Oliver Twist for Roman Polanski. She finally moved to Los Angeles to study at the American Film Institute in Hollywood, where she directed four films including The Evening Journey with Malcolm McDowell and Jack Kehler. Rosenfield’s most recent short, Just In Case, has been winning awards on the festival circuit, including the Award of Merit at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood and the Special Jury Selection at Lady Filmmakers Festival in Santa Monica.
FERDINAND! tells the story of a black-listed writer in 1970’s Czechoslovakia. This Theatre of the Absurd play uses political allegory to demonstrate that no force in the world, be it political, religious or any other kind of oppression, could destroy the human spirit.
